Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
