More than 20 Olympic champions, trainers and additional international athletes have endorsed a statement demanding a end to the death penalty of a boxing champion and trainer, who is sentenced to die in the country.

Escalating Global Anger

Amid growing global condemnation over Iran’s expanding employment of the death penalty as a tool of repression, the forcefully phrased appeal denounces the Iranian regime's ruling to maintain the execution order of the boxing champion.

The athlete, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was detained for participating in nationwide protests in 2019 and charged of backing an resistance movement. He has passed 60 months in incarceration, where he has been abused and confined in solitary confinement.

“Competition is meant to promote faith, solidarity, and bravery,” the supporters stated. “The death penalty of a titleholder for his opinions is a clear violation on these principles and a caution to any competitor who dares to speak out.

Pattern of Killing Competitors

The appeal said that the athlete's case was part of a pattern and emphasized the country's history of putting to death sports champions for their beliefs, such as Habib Khabiri, captain of the soccer squad, and a women's sports leader, leader of the women's volleyball squad. Apprehension and Flawed Legal Process

The boxer was detained in early 2020. The allegations against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and destruction of state assets”. Appeal to International Body
