The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
